Skills Beast Story

It all started in 2018 when I watched a local junior football club training session and observed how the children were being taught to kick. I noticed that despite efforts to assist the children, balls were being kicked incorrectly in all different directions.

The incorrect technique played on my mind.

Over the coming weeks, I watched how the kids and players kicked. I noticed a very high and double handball drop, wrong hand, foot positioning, kicking around the corner and walking into kick while walking offline, and the kicking leg going the incorrect way.

This began replaying on my mind continuously over the coming weeks. Until I woke up on a Sunday morning early at 2 am, and I had a vision of how to improve people’s AFL skill level with kicking. Immediately, I started drawing and writing everything I was thinking. It started with something to keep your kicking arm in, not to move it, a cord to give you balance, and a belt to keep everything in the correct position. I endeavoured to include everything you need to kick an oval-shaped ball correctly and efficiently.

Then I started writing everything that needs to happen, the ball in the correct place over the knee, not moving the ball before kicking, the correct position on the foot when kicking, the balance of the opposite hand, not leaning back, pointing your foot when kicking and keeping your head over the ball after you have kicked. I wanted players to use this as an apparatus that could be effective for both feet.

It was centred on creating more efficient skills for players of all ages and an apparatus that the whole family can use.

It is "Instant Skills with No Limits".

After hundreds of hours of trials, I thought it needed to be tested by one of the greatest players of all time. So I decided to call an old mate of mine,

Jason Dunstall.

I explained the idea to him over the phone, and he was interested in trying it out as there has been nothing in the history of the AFL teaching the kicking skill. Jason warned me that his honesty wouldn’t be able to be held back, and if he didn’t like it, he would tell me straight away.

I flew to Melbourne to see him as I live on the Gold Coast, and instantly he was impressed; he could feel that it puts you in the correct position to kick instantly, and he commented that every junior girl and boy playing AFL should have one of these. Over the past two years, Jason has become an integral part of Skills Beast as his insight into the skill of kicking and goal kicking has turned this apparatus into the Beast it is today.

Below is one of the original ideas: shin guards to keep your kicking arm in the correct position, a belt that is used to keep your luggage together, occy straps for the balance part, and rubber straps for the runways.

Put together with screws and tape, as you can see, the idea is the same, and it did work.

Below is the earliest drawing with the shin guard, occy strap and luggage belt.

Below is the key chain edition that put it together. This was called the AFL coach before Skills Beast.

Below is the pic of Jason and me after I showed him the apparatus.

Blown away!

When I was first introduced to Skills Beast I was blown away, and given I’m normally pretty sceptical about these things, that’s saying something!

The moment I tried on the Skills Beast kicking apparatus, I realised that it puts you in the perfect position to kick the football every time.

My very first thought was that every person playing and learning this game should have one. It’s the ideal way to get rid of all the common bad habits that kids pick up, through no fault of their own, that hinder their ability to kick the ball efficiently.

For kids just starting out, there is no better way to develop good kicking habits and technique. Even experienced or more mature players can use it to eliminate their kicking deficiencies and reinforce best practice.

Skills Beast can make so many people a better kick of the ball, and that can only improve our game.
